Village co-ops | Weaving culture | Material as Text
Weaving is an intrinsic part of Lao culture, art & society. It is a tradition that Lao women weave textiles; a skill passed down from mother to daughter. The process of creating these pieces is very time-consuming. Textiles are hand-loomed from hand-spun silks, cottons and hemp and dyed using natural plant extracts and traditional methods. All our textiles are sources from women’s weaving co-operatives located in villages throughout Laos. These are run for local women, by local women. Purchasing this product encourages the ancient tradition of weaving to continue; supporting sustainable community development and the financial independence of the women who create them. The designs, symbols and motifs have communicative value and reflect the stories, traditions and aesthetics of the various regions in which they were created – ancient Lao superstitions, myths and stories are recorded into the fibres of these textiles. Textiles therefore have significant historical and cultural value, reminding the present wearer of the virtues and superstitions of the past. Textiles are given to newlyweds, babies, friends and family to wear or to decorate the home. The stories contained in motifs are designed to bring good fortune, long life, wealth, health, happiness and even fertility to the owner.
