Lao school project
The pictures below are of a primary school in Phonehong. This is the school my mother attended and where my father taught. My mother tells me that there have been some physical improvements to the school, such as some paving and huts in the yard for the kids to play under during the hot summers and the site had been subdivided and sold off. Inside the classrooms we saw some children at their desks without papers or pens and were told that the children are asked to bring their own supplies, as the school receives minimal government funding and relies on the charity of the local community. We left the school headed for Vientiane and bought all the stationary from the one shop that we could find before we had to return to Australia. We want to be able to do something to begin helping the school so a percentage of purchases through Textile Theory will fund stationary and schoolbooks. We are hoping that our gestures will become grander over time. Please check back for updates of our next visit.
