Lao silk brocade . . .
Tuesday, 30 June 2009
This intricately woven brocade is my mother’s. She bought this piece from her visit to Laos about 10 years ago. She paid a hefty sum for it by Lao and Australian standards. This piece is worn as a Pha Bieng or sash during special occasions. They are highly valued by Lao people because they reflect tradition and when worn, they show the utmost respect for the occasion, like when we dress respectably to visit somebody or to an event. Their motifs carry luck and prosperity to the wearer and the occasion. As it is expensive, it also shows class and social stature as most poorer Lao cannot afford to indulge in a quality silk such as this. This is a beautifully designed piece in both technically and compositionally. As a modern Lao woman living in Australia, I don’t have much of an opportunity to wear pieces such as these, however, as this is perfectly lined on the bottom, I do use them as decadent table runners in my own home. I hope you like it.
