“Textile Theory was borne out of a desire to learn more about my cultural heritage. In order to find some answers, a process of unraveling began, a stripping back to the earliest layer, the palimpsest of my life. This was a spiritual journey to understand my traditional culture, history and by default my own family. I began this through a process of visual inquiry. I observed my mother and grandmother and saw that their traditional dress allowed them to feel a connectedness with Lao culture. I referred to the extensive knowledge of my grandmother, who, as I discovered, was an expert loom weaver. She began to tell me stories that inspired me to travel to a far away place that was once my home, Laos. This journey of discovery, learning the craft of my grandmother through the interaction with Lao people is one that I would like to share.” Sam.
